We\u2019re reminded to be thankful, to help others, and to tell our loved ones how much we appreciate them. But what about the rest of the year? What would happen if we had an attitude of gratitude all year long? Would it be difficult to stay <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcoachinstitute.com\/motivational\/\">motivated<\/a><\/strong>?<br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not always easy to actively express gratitude in our everyday lives, especially when we get busy, are bogged down with a mile-long to-do list, or things aren\u2019t going well. We may occasionally express feelings of gratitude or understand the power of positivity in theory, but actively practicing gratitude is totally different.\u00a0<br \/><\/span><br \/><b>Adopting an attitude of gratitude every day can have a profound impact on every aspect of your life.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It has the power to radically change your life\u2014and we\u2019re going to tell you how.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><b>Why Is Gratitude So Powerful?<br \/><\/b><br \/><b>Gratitude changes your mindset<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span>, which can, in turn, change how you feel about <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everything. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can positively impact your relationships, mental health, physical health, and more.\u00a0<br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2018\/12\/24\/678232331\/if-you-feel-thankful-write-it-down-its-good-for-your-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article on NPR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cited several studies linking the practice of gratitude to better sleep, lower stress, improving relationships, decreasing materialism, and even healthier eating.\u00a0<br \/><\/span><br \/><b>Gratitude can also be a vital component of our mental health. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider these findings from a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/greatergood.berkeley.edu\/article\/item\/how_gratitude_changes_you_and_your_brain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study conducted at Berkeley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that evaluated the power of gratitude for students seeking mental health care:<\/span><br \/><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compared with the participants who wrote about negative experiences or only received counseling, those who wrote gratitude letters reported significantly better mental health four weeks and 12 weeks after their writing exercise ended. This suggests that gratitude writing can be beneficial not just for healthy, well-adjusted individuals, but also for those who struggle with mental health concerns. In fact, it seems, practicing gratitude on top of receiving psychological counseling carries greater benefits than counseling alone, even when that gratitude practice is brief.<br \/><\/span><\/i><br \/><b>Make Expressing Gratitude a Habit<br \/><\/b><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideally, gratitude should be an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">active <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">practice. We all have fleeting moments of gratitude in the day\u2014thanking someone for holding the door open, your partner for taking out the trash, or at the end of a phone call. But<\/span><b> the real power of gratitude happens when we practice it knowingly and intentionally. Or, in other words, when we make it a habit.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Health Coach Institute, one of the main components of our <\/span><b><i>Become a Health Coach <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">program is Habit Change.\u00a0<br \/><\/span><br \/><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are creatures of habit.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2012\/06\/habits-why-we-do-what-we-do\">According to this Harvard Business Review article<\/a>, 40-45% of our behavior occurs out of habit, either unconsciously or in reaction to external demands.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Since we are creatures of habit, then it follows that if we can change our habits, then we can change the very things that determine how happy and healthy we are.<br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habits are the little things we do every day, like getting up at the same time, always leaving your shoes in the same spot, getting a little caffeine \u201cpick me up\u201d at 2pm every day, etc. No matter what they are, our habits are either health <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promoting<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span> or health <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">destroying<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<br \/><\/span><br \/><b>In order to create healthy habits, we teach coaches to help clients bridge what they know they <\/b><b><i>should<\/i><\/b><b> do, with a way to <\/b><b><i>actually<\/i><\/b><b> do it, every single day.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changing habits isn\u2019t easy, but it\u2019s worth it. And implementing a gratitude practice in your life is no different. <\/span><b>Below you\u2019ll find our best tips and tricks for making gratitude a daily habit that will change your life!\u00a0<br \/><\/b><br \/><b>How to Make Your Attitude of Gratitude Second Nature<br \/><\/b><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are several ways to create an attitude of gratitude, that you can incorporate into your life on the daily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Start each day with gratitude.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Each morning when you wake up, write down 5-10 things you\u2019re grateful for. It can be small (cream in my coffee!) or large (my kids!), just list out the wonderful things having a positive impact in your life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every day, tell the people you love most why you love them and why they\u2019re important to you.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>If you start to feel like you\u2019re not doing enough or are failing in some way, write down a list of accomplishments from the past week.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Again, it can be small (got caught up with laundry!) or big (talked to the boss about taking on that big project!).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shift your focus during the day. We all have negative thoughts. When they pop up during the day, force yourself to replace them with something you\u2019re grateful for. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ugh, I ate that second cupcake! <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">becomes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m thankful for cupcakes and the opportunity to share them with my kids!<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Don\u2019t compare yourself to others.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We\u2019ve all heard the saying, \u201cComparison is the thief of joy\u201d and it\u2019s so true. Comparing your life to others\u2019 isn\u2019t fair to you and serves no purpose other than to make you feel less than happy about your own life. Again, it\u2019s about shifting your thoughts throughout the day. If you find yourself thinking <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wish I could look as good in that outfit as her<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tell yourself, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I really<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rocked that presentation today!\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Give back.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Helping others is a sure-fire way to brighten your mood and make you grateful for your own capabilities. Try every day to do something nice for someone\u2014buy a stranger\u2019s coffee, help a busy mom with her groceries, or complete one of your partner\u2019s regular \u201cchores.\u201d It doesn&#8217;t have to be something big or that requires a lot of money, just do a small thing every day to help someone else.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We guarantee if you start doing these things everyday, you will begin to see amazing changes in your life. After a while, take some time to notice how gratitude makes you feel. Do you feel better when you start each day with gratitude? We\u2019re reminded to be thankful, to help others, and to tell our loved ones how much we appreciate them. But what about the rest of the year? What would happen if we had an attitude of gratitude all year long? Would it be difficult to stay <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcoachinstitute.com\/motivational\/\">motivated<\/a><\/strong>?<br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not always easy to actively express gratitude in our everyday lives, especially when we get busy, are bogged down with a mile-long to-do list, or things aren\u2019t going well. We may occasionally express feelings of gratitude or understand the power of positivity in theory, but actively practicing gratitude is totally different.\u00a0<br \/><\/span><br \/><b>Adopting an attitude of gratitude every day can have a profound impact on every aspect of your life.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It has the power to radically change your life\u2014and we\u2019re going to tell you how.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><b>Why Is Gratitude So Powerful?<br \/><\/b><br \/><b>Gratitude changes your mindset<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span>, which can, in turn, change how you feel about <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everything. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can positively impact your relationships, mental health, physical health, and more.\u00a0<br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2018\/12\/24\/678232331\/if-you-feel-thankful-write-it-down-its-good-for-your-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article on NPR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cited several studies linking the practice of gratitude to better sleep, lower stress, improving relationships, decreasing materialism, and even healthier eating.\u00a0<br \/><\/span><br \/><b>Gratitude can also be a vital component of our mental health. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider these findings from a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/greatergood.berkeley.edu\/article\/item\/how_gratitude_changes_you_and_your_brain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study conducted at Berkeley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that evaluated the power of gratitude for students seeking mental health care:<\/span><br \/><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compared with the participants who wrote about negative experiences or only received counseling, those who wrote gratitude letters reported significantly better mental health four weeks and 12 weeks after their writing exercise ended. This suggests that gratitude writing can be beneficial not just for healthy, well-adjusted individuals, but also for those who struggle with mental health concerns. In fact, it seems, practicing gratitude on top of receiving psychological counseling carries greater benefits than counseling alone, even when that gratitude practice is brief.<br \/><\/span><\/i><br \/><b>Make Expressing Gratitude a Habit<br \/><\/b><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideally, gratitude should be an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">active <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">practice. We all have fleeting moments of gratitude in the day\u2014thanking someone for holding the door open, your partner for taking out the trash, or at the end of a phone call. But<\/span><b> the real power of gratitude happens when we practice it knowingly and intentionally. Or, in other words, when we make it a habit.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Health Coach Institute, one of the main components of our <\/span><b><i>Become a Health Coach <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">program is Habit Change.\u00a0<br \/><\/span><br \/><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are creatures of habit.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2012\/06\/habits-why-we-do-what-we-do\">According to this Harvard Business Review article<\/a>, 40-45% of our behavior occurs out of habit, either unconsciously or in reaction to external demands.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Since we are creatures of habit, then it follows that if we can change our habits, then we can change the very things that determine how happy and healthy we are.<br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habits are the little things we do every day, like getting up at the same time, always leaving your shoes in the same spot, getting a little caffeine \u201cpick me up\u201d at 2pm every day, etc. No matter what they are, our habits are either health <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promoting<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span> or health <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">destroying<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<br \/><\/span><br \/><b>In order to create healthy habits, we teach coaches to help clients bridge what they know they <\/b><b><i>should<\/i><\/b><b> do, with a way to <\/b><b><i>actually<\/i><\/b><b> do it, every single day.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changing habits isn\u2019t easy, but it\u2019s worth it. And implementing a gratitude practice in your life is no different. <\/span><b>Below you\u2019ll find our best tips and tricks for making gratitude a daily habit that will change your life!\u00a0<br \/><\/b><br \/><b>How to Make Your Attitude of Gratitude Second Nature<br \/><\/b><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are several ways to create an attitude of gratitude, that you can incorporate into your life on the daily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Start each day with gratitude.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Each morning when you wake up, write down 5-10 things you\u2019re grateful for. It can be small (cream in my coffee!) or large (my kids!), just list out the wonderful things having a positive impact in your life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every day, tell the people you love most why you love them and why they\u2019re important to you.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>If you start to feel like you\u2019re not doing enough or are failing in some way, write down a list of accomplishments from the past week.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Again, it can be small (got caught up with laundry!) or big (talked to the boss about taking on that big project!).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shift your focus during the day. We all have negative thoughts. When they pop up during the day, force yourself to replace them with something you\u2019re grateful for. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ugh, I ate that second cupcake! <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">becomes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m thankful for cupcakes and the opportunity to share them with my kids!<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Don\u2019t compare yourself to others.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We\u2019ve all heard the saying, \u201cComparison is the thief of joy\u201d and it\u2019s so true. Comparing your life to others\u2019 isn\u2019t fair to you and serves no purpose other than to make you feel less than happy about your own life. Again, it\u2019s about shifting your thoughts throughout the day. If you find yourself thinking <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wish I could look as good in that outfit as her<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tell yourself, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I really<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rocked that presentation today!\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Give back.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Helping others is a sure-fire way to brighten your mood and make you grateful for your own capabilities. Try every day to do something nice for someone\u2014buy a stranger\u2019s coffee, help a busy mom with her groceries, or complete one of your partner\u2019s regular \u201cchores.\u201d It doesn't have to be something big or that requires a lot of money, just do a small thing every day to help someone else.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We guarantee if you start doing these things everyday, you will begin to see amazing changes in your life.
