As a solo entrepreneur, I often get asked, \u201cHow do you balance work\/life?\u201d\n\nWell, first:\u00a0<strong>gr8nola<\/strong>\u00a0is life. But no really, when you love and feel passionately about\u00a0what you\u2019re doing, it doesn\u2019t feel like work\u00a0and blends seamlessly into your life.\n\nHowever, there are a few things I\u00a0<i>try<\/i>\u00a0(keyword: \u201ctry\u201d) not to compromise\u2014even for my business\u2014for the sake of keeping myself healthy, balanced and sane.\n<ul>\n \t<li><b>I take sleep seriously.<\/b>\u00a0Without 7-8 hours of sleep, I won\u2019t function properly. At Stanford, I took a\u00a0\u201cSleep &amp; Dreams\u201d class and\u00a0one thing we learned is that\u00a0sleep debt doesn\u2019t dissipate, it accumulates. Did you know that being awake for 18 hours\u00a0is equal to a BAC of 0.08%? I take this seriously and try to keep to a regular sleep cycle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n \t<li><b>I work out regularly and intensely.<\/b>\u00a0I\u2019m one of those people whose \u201chammy\u201d is always spinning (hammy = hamster on its wheel = my brain :). It\u2019s hard to shut my thoughts\u00a0off and I\u2019m always, always thinking. When I work out hard, however, I notice that this is one of the few times\u00a0I\u2019m 100% focused\u00a0<b>in<\/b>the moment. I leverage my workouts not only for staying physically fit and healthy, but for mental breaks as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n \t<li><b>When I\u2019m unproductive, I stop.<\/b>\u00a0Since I\u00a0juggle a business AND a full-time job, I\u00a0work weekends and nights.\u00a0So I\u00a0try to be as productive as possible: Instagramming during my\u00a0walks into the office,\u00a0taking phone calls during my commute, etc. However, it\u2019s just not humanly possible to be productive 24\/7\/365. Sometimes, I have\u00a0days where it\u2019s just not there.\u00a0When I do, I try to recognize this, and if possible,\u00a0I let myself stop (without feeling guilty). I go to the gym. I just chill. I do something completely unrelated to the current task at hand. Then the next hour (or day), I pick up where I left off, and I find myself so much more effective after stepping away.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n \t<li><b>I appreciate the incrementalism.<\/b>\u00a0If starting a food business has taught me anything, it\u2019s the virtue of patience. Breakthroughs, especially in this industry, don\u2019t happen overnight. It takes years of grit:\u00a0small things done consistently\u00a0every day that,\u00a0when connected and in the right sequence, can achieve significant results. I have huge aspirations to build\u00a0<strong>gr8nola<\/strong>\u00a0into an amazing, recognizable brand, but\u00a0I have to constantly\u00a0remind myself to appreciate the process,\u00a0stay patient &amp; celebrate the baby steps along the way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nI\u2019ll admit, I\u2019ve been slipping on some of these. As a solo entrepreneur, I often get asked, \u201cHow do you balance work\/life?\u201d\n\nWell, first:\u00a0<strong>gr8nola<\/strong>\u00a0is life. But no really, when you love and feel passionately about\u00a0what you\u2019re doing, it doesn\u2019t feel like work\u00a0and blends seamlessly into your life.\n\nHowever, there are a few things I\u00a0<i>try<\/i>\u00a0(keyword: \u201ctry\u201d) not to compromise\u2014even for my business\u2014for the sake of keeping myself healthy, balanced and sane.\n<ul>\n \t<li><b>I take sleep seriously.<\/b>\u00a0Without 7-8 hours of sleep, I won\u2019t function properly. At Stanford, I took a\u00a0\u201cSleep &amp; Dreams\u201d class and\u00a0one thing we learned is that\u00a0sleep debt doesn\u2019t dissipate, it accumulates. Did you know that being awake for 18 hours\u00a0is equal to a BAC of 0.08%? I take this seriously and try to keep to a regular sleep cycle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n \t<li><b>I work out regularly and intensely.<\/b>\u00a0I\u2019m one of those people whose \u201chammy\u201d is always spinning (hammy = hamster on its wheel = my brain :). It\u2019s hard to shut my thoughts\u00a0off and I\u2019m always, always thinking. When I work out hard, however, I notice that this is one of the few times\u00a0I\u2019m 100% focused\u00a0<b>in<\/b>the moment. I leverage my workouts not only for staying physically fit and healthy, but for mental breaks as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n \t<li><b>When I\u2019m unproductive, I stop.<\/b>\u00a0Since I\u00a0juggle a business AND a full-time job, I\u00a0work weekends and nights.\u00a0So I\u00a0try to be as productive as possible: Instagramming during my\u00a0walks into the office,\u00a0taking phone calls during my commute, etc. However, it\u2019s just not humanly possible to be productive 24\/7\/365. Sometimes, I have\u00a0days where it\u2019s just not there.\u00a0When I do, I try to recognize this, and if possible,\u00a0I let myself stop (without feeling guilty). I go to the gym. I just chill. I do something completely unrelated to the current task at hand. Then the next hour (or day), I pick up where I left off, and I find myself so much more effective after stepping away.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n \t<li><b>I appreciate the incrementalism.<\/b>\u00a0If starting a food business has taught me anything, it\u2019s the virtue of patience. Breakthroughs, especially in this industry, don\u2019t happen overnight. It takes years of grit:\u00a0small things done consistently\u00a0every day that,\u00a0when connected and in the right sequence, can achieve significant results. I have huge aspirations to build\u00a0<strong>gr8nola<\/strong>\u00a0into an amazing, recognizable brand, but\u00a0I have to constantly\u00a0remind myself to appreciate the process,\u00a0stay patient &amp; celebrate the baby steps along the way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nI\u2019ll admit, I\u2019ve been slipping on some of these.
