If you\u2019re at all plugged into the health world as <span id=\"urn:text-annotation-1dc3b71f-13c4-4645-8e2f-6386419cab64\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other wl-link\" itemid=\"http:\/\/what-is.healthcoachinstitute.com\/hci\/enhancedcategory\/health_coach\">Health Coaches<\/span> and wannabe <span id=\"urn:text-annotation-e87b6739-b768-4346-a236-aae2d0770e7d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other wl-link\" itemid=\"http:\/\/what-is.healthcoachinstitute.com\/hci\/enhancedcategory\/health_coach\">Health Coaches<\/span> surely are then you\u2019ve no doubt heard some shady stuff about nightshades causing inflammatory responses such as joint pain, headaches, muscle tension, stiffness, heartburn and skin rashes among other things.<br \/><br \/>Since the nightshade dilemma is something you are bound to come across with many clients asking if it\u2019s something they should eat or eliminate from their diets, we thought we\u2019d help put some basics in order so you can decide for yourself what\u2019s true for you and help your clients decide for themselves what\u2019s true for them too.<br \/><br \/><b>First, what are nightshades?<\/b><br \/>They\u2019re vegetables or fruit from a family of over 2000 plants called\u00a0<i>Solanaceae,<\/i>\u00a0many of which are inedible and poisonous like the \u201cthe deadly nightshade,\u201d which refers to a plant called Belladonna\u2014a staple Homeopathic remedy\u2014said to have been used as a poison in ancient times.<br \/><br \/>Some say they\u2019re called nightshades because the little green \u201celf-like cap\u201d on top of the veggie looks like a\u2026nightcap. Edible nightshades in our diets today are: potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers and hot peppers\u2014to name a few.<br \/><br \/><strong>Shortlist of possible nightshade sensitivity symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Joint pain<\/li>\n<li>Headache<\/li>\n<li>Stiffness upon waking or sitting for a long time<\/li>\n<li>Muscle tension<\/li>\n<li>Skin rashes<\/li>\n<li>Digestive issues<\/li>\n<li>Heartburn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What makes nightshades toxic to some people?<\/b><br \/>Nightshades contain alkaloids, which are natural chemicals in many plants and also act as a natural insect repellent. Alkaloids are used extensively in pharmaceuticals touted for their pain-fighting properties. Alkaloids are used a lot in herbal medicine like they are in homeopathy as mentioned before.<br \/><br \/>Alkaloids react differently in different people\u2019s systems. For some, they are notorious for causing inflammation, especially for people with autoimmune diseases or food allergies. For others they are harmless.<br \/><br \/><b>Alkaloids found in nightshades are:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Solanine<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Solanine is found in eggplants and potatoes\u2014especially once a potato turns green or gets sprouts. That means it\u2019s time to throw it in the compost.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Capsaicin<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This alkaloid is what makes hot peppers hot. Capsaicin is inflammatory in some people\u2019s systems and anti-inflammatory in others. Only you\u2019ll know how it works for you.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Nicotine<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All nightshades contain nicotine\u2014in way smaller doses than tobacco\u2014but still enough to affect some people that them and enough to make them addictive to some.<br \/><br \/>Aside from alkaloids, nightshades contain tons of antioxidants and other vitamins and minerals. Tomatoes are packed with\u00a0vitamin C, biotin, vitamin K, copper, potassium, manganese, dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin B6, folate, niacin, vitamin E and phosphorus. <br \/><br \/>Whoa!<br \/><br \/>Eggplant contains dietary fiber, vitamin B1, copper, vitamin B6, niacin, potassium, folate, manganese, vitamin K and phytonutrients such as nasunin and chlorogenic acid.<br \/><br \/>Potatoes are loaded with vitamin B6, potassium, copper, vitamin C, manganese, phosphorus, niacin, dietary fiber, phytonutrients and pantothenic acid.<br \/><br \/>And peppers are packed with vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, folate, molybdenum, vitamin E, dietary fiber, vitamin B2, pantothenic acid, niacin and potassium.<br \/><br \/>So on whether to eat them or not, only you will know judging by how in touch you are with any symptoms that arise within hours or days of consumption.<br \/><br \/>The best way to know if you or your client is suffering from nightshade related symptoms is to try a little experiment:<br \/>Completely eliminate nightshades for six to 12 weeks and slowly introduce them back into your or your client\u2019s diet one by one (re-introduce one nightshade twice a day for three days and then stop and assess how the body reacts) all the while becoming aware of any symptoms that arise along the way.<br \/><br \/>Like with any food intolerances, AWARENESS is key to making any changes. If you\u2019re at all plugged into the health world as <span id=\"urn:text-annotation-1dc3b71f-13c4-4645-8e2f-6386419cab64\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other wl-link\" itemid=\"http:\/\/what-is.healthcoachinstitute.com\/hci\/enhancedcategory\/health_coach\">Health Coaches<\/span> and wannabe <span id=\"urn:text-annotation-e87b6739-b768-4346-a236-aae2d0770e7d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other wl-link\" itemid=\"http:\/\/what-is.healthcoachinstitute.com\/hci\/enhancedcategory\/health_coach\">Health Coaches<\/span> surely are then you\u2019ve no doubt heard some shady stuff about nightshades causing inflammatory responses such as joint pain, headaches, muscle tension, stiffness, heartburn and skin rashes among other things.<br \/><br \/>Since the nightshade dilemma is something you are bound to come across with many clients asking if it\u2019s something they should eat or eliminate from their diets, we thought we\u2019d help put some basics in order so you can decide for yourself what\u2019s true for you and help your clients decide for themselves what\u2019s true for them too.<br \/><br \/><b>First, what are nightshades?<\/b><br \/>They\u2019re vegetables or fruit from a family of over 2000 plants called\u00a0<i>Solanaceae,<\/i>\u00a0many of which are inedible and poisonous like the \u201cthe deadly nightshade,\u201d which refers to a plant called Belladonna\u2014a staple Homeopathic remedy\u2014said to have been used as a poison in ancient times.<br \/><br \/>Some say they\u2019re called nightshades because the little green \u201celf-like cap\u201d on top of the veggie looks like a\u2026nightcap. Edible nightshades in our diets today are: potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers and hot peppers\u2014to name a few.<br \/><br \/><strong>Shortlist of possible nightshade sensitivity symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Joint pain<\/li>\n<li>Headache<\/li>\n<li>Stiffness upon waking or sitting for a long time<\/li>\n<li>Muscle tension<\/li>\n<li>Skin rashes<\/li>\n<li>Digestive issues<\/li>\n<li>Heartburn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What makes nightshades toxic to some people?<\/b><br \/>Nightshades contain alkaloids, which are natural chemicals in many plants and also act as a natural insect repellent. Alkaloids are used extensively in pharmaceuticals touted for their pain-fighting properties. Alkaloids are used a lot in herbal medicine like they are in homeopathy as mentioned before.<br \/><br \/>Alkaloids react differently in different people\u2019s systems. For some, they are notorious for causing inflammation, especially for people with autoimmune diseases or food allergies. For others they are harmless.<br \/><br \/><b>Alkaloids found in nightshades are:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Solanine<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Solanine is found in eggplants and potatoes\u2014especially once a potato turns green or gets sprouts. That means it\u2019s time to throw it in the compost.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Capsaicin<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This alkaloid is what makes hot peppers hot. Capsaicin is inflammatory in some people\u2019s systems and anti-inflammatory in others. Only you\u2019ll know how it works for you.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Nicotine<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All nightshades contain nicotine\u2014in way smaller doses than tobacco\u2014but still enough to affect some people that them and enough to make them addictive to some.<br \/><br \/>Aside from alkaloids, nightshades contain tons of antioxidants and other vitamins and minerals. Tomatoes are packed with\u00a0vitamin C, biotin, vitamin K, copper, potassium, manganese, dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin B6, folate, niacin, vitamin E and phosphorus. <br \/><br \/>Whoa!<br \/><br \/>Eggplant contains dietary fiber, vitamin B1, copper, vitamin B6, niacin, potassium, folate, manganese, vitamin K and phytonutrients such as nasunin and chlorogenic acid.<br \/><br \/>Potatoes are loaded with vitamin B6, potassium, copper, vitamin C, manganese, phosphorus, niacin, dietary fiber, phytonutrients and pantothenic acid.<br \/><br \/>And peppers are packed with vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, folate, molybdenum, vitamin E, dietary fiber, vitamin B2, pantothenic acid, niacin and potassium.<br \/><br \/>So on whether to eat them or not, only you will know judging by how in touch you are with any symptoms that arise within hours or days of consumption.<br \/><br \/>The best way to know if you or your client is suffering from nightshade related symptoms is to try a little experiment:<br \/>Completely eliminate nightshades for six to 12 weeks and slowly introduce them back into your or your client\u2019s diet one by one (re-introduce one nightshade twice a day for three days and then stop and assess how the body reacts) all the while becoming aware of any symptoms that arise along the way.<br \/><br \/>Like with any food intolerances, AWARENESS is key to making any changes.
