{"id":9004111223109180,"date":"2022-05-06T16:00:02","date_gmt":"2022-05-06T16:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.healthcoachinstitute.com\/?p=9004111223109180"},"modified":"2022-05-25T18:31:04","modified_gmt":"2022-05-25T18:31:04","slug":"what-is-international-no-diet-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.healthcoachinstitute.com\/articles\/what-is-international-no-diet-day\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Celebrate International No Diet Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Diet culture is so deeply embedded into our society, it\u2019s almost impossible to know when you\u2019re participating in it. The idea of restricting calories, deeming certain foods off-limits, and keeping that ill-fitting pair of jeans in the closet for when you \u201cget skinny again\u201d are all byproducts of living in a diet-obsessed world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the funny thing about diets? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2607302\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">They don\u2019t actually work<\/a>. In fact, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/138\/3\/e20161649\/52684\/Preventing-Obesity-and-Eating-Disorders-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 2016 study on preventing obesity and eating disorders in adolescents<\/a>, dieting was the most important predictor of developing an eating disorder. And those who practiced extreme diet restriction were 18x more likely to develop an eating disorder than those who didn\u2019t. That\u2019s why it\u2019s more important than ever to participate in No Diet Day, to help lead the next generation by example.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-history-of-no-diet-day\">History of No Diet Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a response to the obsessive thoughts around weight and dieting, in 1992 Mary Evans Young began No Diet Day in the United Kingdom. Young is the director of the British group \u201cDiet Breakers,\u201d and was inspired to spread the message of the dangers of dieting after her own personal struggle with anorexia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The overall goals of No Diet Day are to reframe the idea of a \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cbad\u201d body shape, raise awareness about weight and size discrimination, to honor victims of eating disorders and weight-loss surgery, and to have a day free from food obsession.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The holiday began as a small celebration, with women ages 21-76 gathered in London\u2019s Hyde Park for a picnic. Since that time it has grown: It\u2019s now an international affair, with the social media hashtag #NoDietDay spreading Mary\u2019s message far and wide. In fact, in 1998 the International Size Acceptance Association (ISAA) and the National Organization for Women (NOW) created similar, separate holidays based around loving and accepting your size.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-celebrate-no-diet-day\">How to Celebrate No Diet Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), the central concept of No Diet Day is to reject diet culture. And how exactly do you reject diet culture? Here\u2019s what they suggest:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Question cultural messages about food and weight<\/li><li>Accept and respect your body<\/li><li>Promote body diversity and encourage others to do the same<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcoachinstitute.com\/articles\/intuitive-eating-principles\/\">Trust your body to know when it is hungry and full<\/a><\/li><li>Work to eliminate body shame and stigma<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, it\u2019s easier said than done to reverse an entire lifetime\u2019s worth of food and weight-related thoughts, but that\u2019s what No Diet Day is for. It\u2019s a time to take stock of what dietary habits are no longer serving you, and figure out how to have a positive relationship with your body\u2014no matter how big or small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are 10 more actionable ways to celebrate No Diet Day:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Eat at your favorite restaurant<\/strong>, and order the dish you\u2019ve been craving but never allow yourself to get.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Do a workout that you actually enjoy <\/strong>rather than whatever is going to burn the most calories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. No weighing yourself!<\/strong> In fact, just throw the whole scale out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Make a list of things you love about yourself<\/strong>\u2014none of which can be physical.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Get dressed <\/strong>without looking in the mirror after.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. Try a new recipe<\/strong> that you normally wouldn\u2019t make because it\u2019s not \u201chealthy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7. Throw away old, ill-fitting clothing<\/strong> and replace them with things in your actual size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8. Start a journal <\/strong>to keep track of negative thoughts related to body image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9. Create a cuss jar <\/strong>that everybody in the family donates to when they make negative comments about their own body or somebody else\u2019s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>10. deeply embedded into our society, it\u2019s almost impossible to know when you\u2019re participating in it. The idea of restricting calories, deeming certain foods off-limits, and keeping that ill-fitting pair of jeans in the closet for when you \u201cget skinny again\u201d are all byproducts of living in a diet-obsessed world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>But the funny thing about diets? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2607302\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">They don\u2019t actually work<\/a>. In fact, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/138\/3\/e20161649\/52684\/Preventing-Obesity-and-Eating-Disorders-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 2016 study on preventing obesity and eating disorders in adolescents<\/a>, dieting was the most important predictor of developing an eating disorder. And those who practiced extreme diet restriction were 18x more likely to develop an eating disorder than those who didn\u2019t. That\u2019s why it\u2019s more important than ever to participate in No Diet Day, to help lead the next generation by example.\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2 id=\"h-history-of-no-diet-day\">History of No Diet Day<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>As a response to the obsessive thoughts around weight and dieting, in 1992 Mary Evans Young began No Diet Day in the United Kingdom. Young is the director of the British group \u201cDiet Breakers,\u201d and was inspired to spread the message of the dangers of dieting after her own personal struggle with anorexia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The overall goals of No Diet Day are to reframe the idea of a \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cbad\u201d body shape, raise awareness about weight and size discrimination, to honor victims of eating disorders and weight-loss surgery, and to have a day free from food obsession.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The holiday began as a small celebration, with women ages 21-76 gathered in London\u2019s Hyde Park for a picnic. Since that time it has grown: It\u2019s now an international affair, with the social media hashtag #NoDietDay spreading Mary\u2019s message far and wide. In fact, in 1998 the International Size Acceptance Association (ISAA) and the National Organization for Women (NOW) created similar, separate holidays based around loving and accepting your size.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2 id=\"h-how-to-celebrate-no-diet-day\">How to Celebrate No Diet Day<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), the central concept of No Diet Day is to reject diet culture. And how exactly do you reject diet culture? Here\u2019s what they suggest:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul><li>Question cultural messages about food and weight<\/li><li>Accept and respect your body<\/li><li>Promote body diversity and encourage others to do the same<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcoachinstitute.com\/articles\/intuitive-eating-principles\/\">Trust your body to know when it is hungry and full<\/a><\/li><li>Work to eliminate body shame and stigma<\/li><\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Sure, it\u2019s easier said than done to reverse an entire lifetime\u2019s worth of food and weight-related thoughts, but that\u2019s what No Diet Day is for. It\u2019s a time to take stock of what dietary habits are no longer serving you, and figure out how to have a positive relationship with your body\u2014no matter how big or small.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Here are 10 more actionable ways to celebrate No Diet Day:<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>1. Eat at your favorite restaurant<\/strong>, and order the dish you\u2019ve been craving but never allow yourself to get.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>2. Do a workout that you actually enjoy <\/strong>rather than whatever is going to burn the most calories.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>3. No weighing yourself!<\/strong> In fact, just throw the whole scale out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>4. Make a list of things you love about yourself<\/strong>\u2014none of which can be physical.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>5. Get dressed <\/strong>without looking in the mirror after.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>6. Try a new recipe<\/strong> that you normally wouldn\u2019t make because it\u2019s not \u201chealthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>7. Throw away old, ill-fitting clothing<\/strong> and replace them with things in your actual size.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>8. Start a journal <\/strong>to keep track of negative thoughts related to body image.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>9. Create a cuss jar <\/strong>that everybody in the family donates to when they make negative comments about their own body or somebody else\u2019s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>10.
