We all know greens are helluva good for you.

Eat Greens for A Health Boost!

But today, how about thinking outside the usual green box of spinach, kale, green peas, avocado, and cucumber and considering adding a little something different to the mix?

For most people eating sea veggies is so new and unfamiliar that it’s hard to know where to start. That’s okay. Here’s a very simple explanation of what’s what in the underwater world of edibles.

Seaweed

Seaweed is the blanket term for plants and algae that grow underwater in the great oceans and includes algae and kelp. Seaweed can be microscopic or gigantic like underwater networks of forests.

Kelp

Kelp is large seaweed that belongs to the brown algae family. Kelp grows in shallow, underwater kelp forests.

Algae

There are different types of algae—red, brown and green—that all belong under the seaweed umbrella.
Sea veggies are well known as superfoods because of their vast mineral and vitamin content that they absorb from the ocean waters.

They are highly rich in iodine (which is important for a healthy thyroid), magnesium and calcium. Plus, they are powerful antioxidants and have a lot of Vitamin K, which helps build strong bones.

Think sea veggies such as:

  • Kombu (chewy brown algae found in Japan packed with calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, vanadium and zinc.)
  • Wakame (chewy, stringy seaweed popular in Japanese and Korean restaurants), arame ()
  • Dulse (a red seaweed often sprinkled in soups, which is rich in Vitamin B6, iodine, iron and potassium.)
  • Nori (the mild seaweed used to make sushi rolls and is a great source of Vitamins C and A, potassium and magnesium.)
  • Arame (this is a Japanese sea oak kelp with a mild flavor that is rich in folate, Vitamins B2, B3, B5, Vitamins A and K, calcium, iodine, iron, and magnesium.)
  • Chlorella and Spirulina (both are freshwater blue-green algae that are high in essential amino acids, iron, protein, B, C, D and E Vitamins known to radically boost energy, detox heavy metals and fight cancer.)

Buy your favorite, trusted brand of superfood green powder and add it to your smoothies, soups, oats, eggs, or salad dressings!
