“You’re going to be a what?”
This is often the reaction new coaches get from family and friends when they announce they’re pursuing a Health Coaching career.
But instead of feeling worried about what those close to you will think and say, you should feel excited!

Here’s why:
You have a terrific opportunity to educate the loved ones in your life all about the life-changing benefits of working with a Health Coach and the meaningful difference you’re going to make in others’ lives. You also have an amazing opportunity to expand your client network through the power of word of mouth.

Not sure where to begin? Here are some helpful pointers for sharing your new career path with the ones who are near and dear to you.

“This is what a Health Coach does….”

Your family and friends may not be very familiar with Health Coaching in general, so they may not really understand what a Health Coach actually does. Here’s your chance to talk to them and explain the role of a Health Coach.

Start out by telling them that, simply put, Health Coaches work with people to empower them to make positive and lasting changes in their lives. You’re an educated guide, not someone who tells a person what to do. Rather, you help them figure out what they need to do to be healthy and whole—and how to do it!

A few key points you might want to make:
I’m trained to empower people to achieve their health and wellness goals. I received specialized training under successful six-figure Health Coaches in how to help others master healthy habits that serve them for life through the power of habit change.

I focus on the big picture. As a Health Coach, my goal isn’t around offering “quick fixes.” I help my clients take stock of their lives, set goals, and then develop a plan for achieving those goals over time that is sustainable over the long haul.

I help make a real difference in the world. Now’s your chance to use your storytelling skills! Talk about the ways that people often need guidance to make healthier choices in life. Give an example from your own life about a challenge that you’ve confronted and overcome. Then share how you, as a Health Coach, can be a guide to another person who may be struggling.

When you’re talking about the role of a Health Coach, try not to use any jargon or job-specific language that might be confusing. You can also point them to your coaching website and your social media channels to help them get a better sense of what you do, how you work with others, and how you talk about your services to clients.

“This is why I’m super excited about Health Coaching…”

By now, your loved ones will probably have caught on that you’re enthusiastic about your career choice. Let them know that it’s a great career path, with numerous benefits that really speak to you.

You can share some of the best reasons that you’re so enthusiastic about your Health Coaching career, like the fact that:

Health Coaching changes lives. Health Coaches are revolutionizing healthcare by helping people take a preventive approach to health, partnering with clients to customize a plan to achieve their goals, and providing the support and accountability that are critical to making changes that last.

Health Coaching is a career with unlimited potential. There are about a zillion different opportunities available right now Health Coaches! A Health Coaching job can be satisfying on so many levels. It’s really easy to get excited about that!

“Sure, I’m happy to answer your questions about Health Coaching!”

With all this new knowledge that you’ve imparted to them, your family and friends will undoubtedly have questions for you. And that’s a good thing! It means they’re interested and they care enough about you to care about your career choice. Plus, it gives you the chance to keep talking about Health Coaching and why you’re so passionate about it!

You’ll probably still have to field a few questions from time to time or explain some aspect of your job again. You may have to address a few misconceptions every once in a while, too. Keeping the avenues of communication open is a useful way to both teach people about your career choice and suggest that a Health Coach might be able to help them, too.

“Can you spread the word?”

Now that your friends and family know what you do as a Health Coach, they can be your best ambassadors. With the information you’ve given them, they can casually spread the word about your ability to help others transform their health and wellness.

Say, for instance, your parents’ neighbor asks what you’re up to these days. Your parents can mention that you’re enjoying your career as a Health Coach. You never know—your neighbor might be struggling with a health issue you’d be perfectly equipped to help them address. This revelation about your newfound career path could actually turn into a larger client roster for you.
