Sometimes people say things that don’t make us feel too great about ourselves. People aren’t always as patient or supportive or encouraging as we want them, or hope them, to be. Nobody is perfect.
Sometimes it’s the voice inside your own head that has the most harmful effect on your self-esteem and well being. It’s that voice, no matter how quiet or loud, that often keeps you stuck in a negative mindset and old, destructive patterns of behavior that don’t serve you and that you may wish you could change.
The good news is you can change your language. And there is no better person than a coach to help mirror positive language back to you. Because your coach is one person in your life who knows not to fall back on language that does nothing to support you in getting in touch with your own inner strength and resiliency. Your coach knows that words are powerful. And that we live our lives according to what we believe about ourselves.
Here are 25 things your coach would never say to you:
- Not my problem.
- Get a life.
- Stop being a victim.
- I told you so.
- How can I make that better?
- If only it weren’t so.
- Your life is not so bad.
- Who needs goals?
- Forget about the future.
- There is no truth.
- Personal growth is a waste of time.
- What if you fail?
- There’s nothing to be done about that.
- Why look in the mirror?
- Too risky.
- You don’t get to choose.
- Just don’t think about it.
- We all have problems.
- It’s just the way it is.
- It’s the way it’s always been.
- You are not in control of your destiny.
- Who are you to want more?
- It’s pointless even trying.
- Aha’s are for Oprah TV.
What might a coach say instead of these things?
Choose one or more of the sentences you never want to hear yourself say again or you never want to hear anybody else say to you and turn it around.
