Exploring the Health Coach Job Market

According to Marketdata Enterprises, Inc., 86% of the U.S.’s $2.7 trillion dollar healthcare expenditure is attributed to people dealing with chronic and mental health conditions. The study goes on to say that Health Coaches can play a role in cutting these costs by helping people make healthy lifestyle changes, replace unhealthy habits with healthy ones, and manage chronic conditions with diet and exercise.

The number of practicing Health Coaches in the U.S. grew at an annual rate of 8% between 2006 and 2017. Many of those coaches came from the healthcare field (think nurses/MDs, chiropractors, massage therapists, nutritionists, psychologists, and social workers), deciding to expand their client reach by obtaining their Health Coach certification.

The Health Coach Job Market in 2018

As of 2018, Marketdata estimates there to be 109,000 Health Coaches and health educators combined in the U.S. The market was valued at $6.14 billion last year (a 15% increase since 2014) and is projected to grow at a rate of 5.4% over the next four years. By 2022, Marketdata predicts that the U.S. Health Coaching market will be worth $7.85 billion, with more than 121,000 practicing coaches.

Today, Health Coaches are being hired by consumers, healthcare organizations, physician’s offices, and wellness providers for the individualized care and support they can offer those wishing to improve their health and wellness.

Even insurance companies are bringing in Health Coaches to administer disease prevention programs to patients and at-risk communities. Marketdata shares that Health Coaches are working with these groups primarily in the areas of smoking cessation and diabetes/weight/stress management.
